Raffle sales are over! The drawing was held October 31st at 6:oo p.m. The winner was Crystal Bowman. The raffle included a doghouse made by Rubbermaid, a huge basket with dog food, dog toys, photo frames, etc. It was a great value! We raised over $300.00 and a check will be given to Linda Harris, our local wildlife rehabber! She does a great service to the community and helps take in orphaned and injured wildlife, nurses them back to health and releases them back into the wild. She does all this on her own and does not receive any funds for doing so. So, we wanted to help and Pet Connection donated all the items - worth $300.00 if rang up at the register - and we will be giving her a check for all the money collected at the store and tickets sold at the Dixie Classic Fair.
Look back for more fund raising events being held at our store this upcoming holiday season!

Raffle ticket sales still continuing...
If you haven't bought your raffle tickets for this great dog basket and dog house, now is the time. ALL PROCEEDS to to Wildlife Rehabber, Linda Harris. She does such great work in the community and loves animals more than anyone I have ever met. She is truly committed to saving and fostering the animals and then lovingly releasing them back into nature where they belong. She really does a great service to the community and this raffle is to raise money for her to buy milk replacer, crates, etc. whatever she needs to help her foster and release her animal babies.
Tickets are $1.00 each and the retail value of this basket and goods is well over $300.00!
If you have any questions regarding wildlife, give Linda a call at 755-1780. She is super busy this time of the year. If she does not answer, please leave her a message and she will call her back. Just be sure to tell her what you are calling about and leave her a phone number! Our goal (quite lofty) is $1,000.00. I have until October 31st - so help me accomplish this goal and help out a real animal lover!
We have a 6 foot Red Tail Boa!
PICTURE IS COMING.... I cannot seem to remember to bring my camera so maybe this will prompt me to do so. However, in the meantime, we have a 6 foot red tail boa. Gorgeous snake for those that like/love snakes. He really does have remarkable colorations and patterns. Truly something to see. I promise to post a picture soon!
Gold Dojo Loach or Weather Loach is Max's Pick this Week!

Max's Pick This Week - September 5th - He has great taste in fish!
The Dojo Loach or Weather Loach is a true curiosity! Its name is derived from their habit of becoming very active when there is a weather change!
This remarkable fish is quite hardy and adaptable, very easy to care for. They wiggle about in an eel like fashion scavenging the bottom for leftover bits of food, even munching on snails. They also like to dig and burrow into the substrate often burying themselves. Provide an aquarium that is large enough for its playful antics, have a soft substrate of sand or fine gravel, and have a good filter for the detritus they stir up. They are most active in the evening, so during the day they like hiding and resting places created with rocks and wood. Plants are nice but be sure they are potted

These fish have some very unique qualities. The Dojo Loach or Weather Loach are very 'pet-like'. They can be trained to take food from your hand and even enjoy being touched. They are jumpers. Should they happen to leap out of their home they can survive for a time even out of the water. A couple of ways they do this is by producing a thick mucus coating that keeps them moist; and by being able to swallow air, absorbing atmospheric oxygen through their hind gut.
The Dojo Loach or Weather Loach makes an excellent community fish with other non-aggressive tank mates. They love to socialize with other fish and loaches sometimes resting with them or sometimes chasing them about, but they don't hurt them.

Max also picked out more pictus peru catfish. He loves those baby catfish. Guess I will have to get some to add to our tank at home!

Dragon Fish - Max's PIck of the Week
Dragon Fish - Max loved these fish. They do have very large mouths and will eat anything that will fit in there. They are pretty interesting and have little eyes on top of its head. Long, slender and gray, they do swim through the water a lot like an eel. They love tubifex worms and frozen bloodworm cubes.

Our Guinea Birds
Fourth of July Parade in Ararat, NC
Max, Grace and I were in the Fourth of July parade for Ararat, NC. We threw out doggie biscuits to all the people we knew that had dogs or if we saw folks with dogs. Max had a lot of fun and of course, Grace barked at everyone. We drew a lot of attention with our plush snake toy on our antenna. We had a great time and saw a lot of folks we knew! Happy Fourth!
Sweetest Softest Mini-Rex Rabbit
We have one Mini-Rex Rabbit left. He is the sweetest. He does "thump" when you vacuum around his cage though. He has not gotten accustom to the daily vacuum schedule. He is as soft as he looks. Mini-Rex Rabbits are the largest of the dwarf varieties of rabbits. They can grow from 6 to 9 pounds and they main characteristics are the large ears and super-soft fur. We have one left and we have really enjoyed them.

One good turn . . .
It being such a hot political year and all, we thought we should forgo party politics and in the spirit of bi-partisanship, give equal time for the other side.
Since our puppy adoption was such a great success we will be holding a cat adoption fair in May.
Check back here and on our website. http://www.petconnectionpetshop.com/ for more info.

Ferret, ferret fly away home.
The little white-faced ferret went home with a new family on Saturday. The other girl ferret that's left has a new little fluffy toy to keep her company, until she finds a family to take her home. They got their 9 week shot and vet check-up just before the white-faced one left. The vet said that they might be sore for a few days, but it sure didn't slow either of them down any!

Captain! There be FERRETS here!

Adopt-a-Puppy Day- Day 2
Adopt-a-Puppy Days Day 2
This nice young man selected this little pup and was thinking of the name, "Sweet Pea".
Brianna and Hailey came on Friday with their parents to look at the puppies. After thinking it over, they came back on Saturday and adopted this little puppy.
Blackjack got a great home with Amy. She saw him listed on the website and fell in love with him. He really is a beautiful dog!
Jimmy, Alexis and Makayla adopted this litte puppy. They were excited to get him home and pick out a name.
Christopher got this American Bull Dog boy puppy.
We dressed Newman up in our baseball jersey and let him roam the store while we were waiting for Tamara to get off of work to pick him up.
Claudia, from Thelma Lou's Puppy Parlor, came by to wish us well and she gave out cards to all new adoptees for a free bath at her grooming salon.
Melanie is a volunteer at the Surry County Animal Shelter. She does an amazing job putting the pictures on Petfinder and helping with their promotions.
Linda Harris from the Surry County Animal Shelter administered the shots, vaccines and paperwork and answered questions about the dogs. Thanks to her for helping us organize the event so the puppies could find homes.
Saturday was the 2nd day of our adoption fair with the Surry County Animal Shelter. We were so excited because five had been adopted the day before and we were unsure what to expect!! So, we rolled up our sleeves and got ready for Saturday...

[
Patty picked out her puppy and named her "Molly". Such a sweet baby pup.
Madison came with her dad to adopt this little guy. They were going to wait a few days to see what personality it had before giving him a name.
Stacy picked out this great puppy. Her mother and sister, also animal lovers, were excited about the new addition to the family!
Kayla, a volunteer for the two days (THANK YOU!!) came and adopted Ruby, this great dog. She has the most amazing brown eyes and best personality!
Lori Riccitello , owner of Meadows of Dan Trading Company on Main Street, and her husband, John, adopted two shepherd/lab mixes. They are going to a great home. Stop in at Meadows of Dan and visit Lori at her store.
Tamara from Meadows of Dan Trading Company fell in love with beauty. Her husband named him Newman and he was the sweetest dog. Several people wanted him. We had a great time playing with him at the store while we were waiting for Tamara to get off work.

My son, Max, came to look at the puppies. Here he is with dad.

Pet Connection Adopt-a-Puppy Days Day 1
The pups arrived and they were ready to play. Play the movie and see how they romp about.
Day 1 was certainly a success! Linda arrived with the puppies!! Everyone was so excited. They were so adorable and ready to play! Several were adopted and we were so thrilled that they found loving, wonderful new homes. Here are some of the great families that took home their new babies.

Pedro, Elizabeth, Eric and Bryan chose this beautiful little puppy. They were considering the name, Lucky, which sounds like a great name to me.

We are really thrilled these guys found homes and we look forward to tomorrow and placing more puppies in great families. Please check back for more great stories and also be sure and check our website for new additions to the Surry County Animal Shelter. We continue to run the pets they have available on our home page at http://www.petconnectionpetshop.com/. You can also call the shelter at 401-8481 if you have any questions about their adoption program.

These customers nearly got licked to death. Check back tomorrow!

This little guy was so adorable and the first to be adopted. His new name is Brownie.

The next adoptee was adopted by Kelly. He has not decided on a name as of yet. Both puppies came from the same litter and were approximately 10 weeks old. Linda, from the Surry County Animal Shelter, administered all the adoptions and collected the $90.00 fee. The fee included age appropriate first shots and having the pup spayed or neutered.

Three more adoptions took place on our first day! Autumn and Nate took home their little black, white and brown baby.

Mira came in and adopted our last baby pup of the day.

After a long day of play and constant attention, these pups have had enough and they were getting some serious zzzzz's. These three little babies will be back tomorrow for another opportunity for them to find that permanent family.

Little Emerald Jewels

A customer called the other day asking for green snakes. We haven't seen any available to us in about five years, but I took her name and number and told her I would call if any became available.
The following Monday I got the new animal list and lo and behold there were green snakes! I called the lady and told her, she said that her granddaughter had been praying to get one.
They came and got one and now he is in his new happy little home!

Inagural Blog
Hello, welcome to my first posting. If you read the "about us" profile you know that we are a Pet Shop. I thought it would be neat to create this blog as a place where we could post some of our daily ramblings, and things that we see or things that happen in and around our Pet Shop.
Other than taking care of the animals at the pet store we personally have our dog Grace, which if you've ever been in the store you've no doubt met. Sometimes she gets a little protective over the counter area and barks at unsuspecting customers. :)
At home we have two goats, Billy and Blaze who went on walk-about yesterday! I came home and they were on the outside of the fence looking in!
We just acquired four Guinea Hens, they have been penned up now for about a month and a half. I intend on releasing one at the end of the month so he will hang around with his buddies and doing the same with the others so they will hang around and help rid us of ticks.
So keep checking back for updates about what's going on, both at home and at the pet store.
